'RIPTIDE' ANALYSIS

RIPTIDE- VANCE JOY

Vance Joy is an Australian singer/songwriter signed to Atlantic Records, who's parent company is Warner Music Group. The American record label specialises in jazz, R&B and soul music. Artists currently signed to Atlantic Records includes,  Vance Joy, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Ed Sheeran.

The song Riptide was apart of Vance Joy's debuting album, 'God loves you when you're dancing'. The music video is simple yet effective. The video correlates to what Joy is singing about, and this relates to Goodwin's theory of conventions of a music video. The simple music video could have been done due to a lack of budget, however it if effective as it amplifies the lyrics as the images match what Joy is singing. Therefore it allows for the audience to concentrate on the lyrics and the music instead of focusing on dramatic visuals. The visuals has a confusing  narrative which is due to the use of hard jump cuts. This makes each clip a separate narrative within itself. However there is an abstract arch narrative over the whole music video. This can be shown when the main female character disappears  and then is trying to escape from being tied up. As well as over every chorus the women singing becomes more distressed, scared and less composed.

There are a few intertextual references in the song 'Riptide'. The opening shot of a blue sky, with the camera moving from a vertically up angle, to a slightly high angle with the title at the bottom of the screen in small block writing, is similar to that used in a film poster, presenting the music video as a short film. This is used to entice the audience as the blue sky makes people feel happy as it reminds the audience of  summer. This style has been appropriated due to the lyrics creating a story, which can be interpreted as a man falling in love with a women who is slowly changing before his eyes. This can be shown when he sings, " I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations", meaning he has overcomed his fear, and that she is now his girlfriend. The lyric "lady running down to the riptide, taken away through the dark side, I wanna be your left hand man." could be interpreted as his girlfriend being engulfed by bad decisions which has changed her. This can be referenced, as a 'riptide' is a type of current which occurs near beaches due to breaking tides. They can drag people out to sea which can lead them to be engulfed by the sea. Therefore this can relate to the narrative as the women has been engulfed by a bad decision that has changed her dramatically. There are also references within the music video to the horror/thriller genres as there is a short clip of a women being dragged out of the scene, and the character going missing within the graveyard.

There is the use of voyeurism as there is a short clip of a women taking her bathing suit off, this was presented by the dismemberment of her torso and blonde hair. The fact that the women is being shown  can show that the male gaze is voyeuristic as the song is sung from a male's point of view.

The Prodigy- Firestarter

The music video Firestarter by The Prodigy starts off with loud music, which on every main beat, the lights in the tunnel start to light up. From this we can see that the music matches the editing which makes more of a cinematic impact on the audience. The use of simple backgrounds and setting can show how the singer wants the min focus of attention to be on him, and the chaos, within the music video. The use of middle/long shots can show the unnatural, dance movements the singer is using. The use of the close up shots can demonstrate his almost devil like persona. This can be conveyed by the mise-en-scene. The hairstyle of the main singer has two spikes made with his head, therefore could signify devil horns. This was apart of the punk rock genre, which can be shown by the type of music being played along with the mannerisms of the singer, very violent, 'in your face' and going "crazy" in type with the music. There is a clear relationship  between the lyrics and the visuals as the music is quite violent, and the visuals of the singer, who appears to have a "drunken swagger" to him. This music video can be applied to Goodwin's key features distinguished in music videos as there are a lot of close ups of the main singer. This allows the audience to see and love the main singer as well as being able to uphold their own star image

 Madonna -4 minutes
The music video 4 minutes by Madonna which features Justin Timberland and Justin Timberlake starts off with Justin Timberland rapping. The use of Madonna having these two popular well known men within their industry maybe so that she can reach out to a wider audience. The video then goes into a mixture of shots of Justin Timberlake and Madonna singing while jumping over different props which can make the video more exciting for the viewer. There are a mixture of long and close up shots of Madonna in  a corset. This can show how she is objectifying her body for the male gaze. At the end of the music video there is a small dance break which can help the audience to be entertained.

Spice Girls-wannabe
The music video Wannabe by the Spice Girls starts of with the five of the girls singing in the street. The whole music video has no cuts init. This make it feel as if the audience is coming along with the girls over the journey of the music video. There are different shots ranging from long and medium can show how the camerawork is designed for the audience to see their bodies. Objectifying them but also making sure the audience can see their dance movements. The costume for all five girls are in short dresses or tight trousers which once again objectifies their bodies to the male gaze. This can also represent the star image to the audience.

Lily Allen- The Fear
The song The Fear by Lily Allen starts off with Lily Allen in a caravan singing giving a direct mode of address to the camera. The use of birds eye shots can help the audience see the grand gesture of a man carrying her while other men are dancing behind her. Each different room in the setting has almost a different personality. For example the first room with all of the men, the bedroom with lots of food and children's toys, and the third room where she is surrounded by presents. This can show that the music video is based on almost a child's memories. When outside of the house and there are lots of balloons, which can link in to child memories as children enjoy balloons and playing with them. The use of the song title, "The Fear" links in with the music video as she is fearing growing up, which can be represented by the child like references throughout the video.

Set text trump work

The denotation of the use of the statue is showing that America is no longer a free country. This can be represented the use of the statue covering her face, as if the country is worried for its safety . The use of the black smoke can show how there is potential war due to the fact that president trump is now in power. As Trump is right wing and the newspaper is obviously left wing, we can see that the newspaper is not happy about the fact that Trump has been elected. The use of 'What have they done?' can show how the newspaper believes that Trump will ruin America instead of 'make it great'. Hence showing how disastrous the newspaper believes Trump is as president of the United states.

The use of showing Donald Trump with his fist in he air can show that the newspaper 'the Times' is a neutral newspaper however in this article it appears that they are more right winged, this is because it looks as if they are happy that Trump was elected. As well as showing that he is powerful and dominant in comparison to the Vice president standing next to him who doesn't look very superior.  The use of the caption 'The New World' can show how they believe Trump being in power will benefit America hugely, and will keep to his tag line, 'Make America great Again.' the use of the american flag behind them can show how patriotic he is, therefore showing how much he cares for the country.

Different trump victory newspaper front covers- analysis

Image result for trump winning newspaper front covers

The image from the Daily Mail show Trump to be described as a 'earthquake'. This can represent that much like a earthquake will destruct and destroy most things within its path. The use of the picture of Trump standing in quite a strong pose can show how even though he is now president there are many that fear his presidency due to how he proposes to run The Unites States of America.

The image above shows the 'Daily News' front cover of when Donald Trump won the US election in 2016.  The use of the dramatic 'Trump is Hitler' can show that the newspaper evidently did not want Trump in the office. This can show how they believe that Trump would start a war due to him making racist remarks.

differences and similarities between different types of newspaers.

Broadsheet newspapers follow a more serious ad formal tone in comparison to tabloid newspapers.  Broadsheets are used to show facts of current fairs. Examples of newspapers which are broadsheet are 'The Daily Telegraph', 'The Times', 'The independent', etc. Broadsheet newspapers tend to be a lot bigger in size in comparison to tabloid newspapers. They are double the size which ensures more content.

  2. Hammer Films are known for their defining films of the horror genre, however only one third of their movies are made in the specific horror genre. The rest of the movies are sci-fi, psychological and thrillers.
  3. From the start up of the company to the 50's, the content used for Hammer Films was predominantly crime/thriller kinds of movies. However in the 50's they started to make horror films.
  4.  The company made history when making the first fully colour film, 'The Curse Of Frankenstein'.
